Our local council is very proud of balancing its budget, and well it should be -- but the cost has been high. While the British government always seems to find the money for a bit of a war, local services have been cut to the bone, festivals cancelled, local streets a mess. Every local party campaigned for cleaner streets when they were elected way back in May 2003 -- yet they're only now beginning to do something about it. No wonder no-one votes! This is my "grumpy old man" reaction to the latest piece of accounting verbiage from the local council leader which ran in various local papers in Lancaster.
