Compost: The City Council has just started to roll out more recycling bins in Lancaster and that sorted of prompted this cartoon. At the back of the Judge's Lodgings there are no less than five of them lined up in a row like poor man's Daleks.

Things I want to know about Recycling Bins:

• We don't own them. They belong to the City Council who want us to put them in our back yard. Can we charge them ground rent?
• If we're now expected to sort out our rubbish, will this mean the council tax will be reduced? (Yeah, right...)
• Which bright spark decided to deliver the bins in August (even if it was the last week in the month), when people are on holiday?

Unexpected House Guests: Nick and I debated whether we should do this one, simply because what's happened in the US after Hurricane Katrina got more and more shocking as the days went on. Then my wife told me about a news report where one very large American compared what had happened to him as being as bad as anything in the Third World. I thought about the tiny children I'd seen starving on TV yet again in the central Africa -- and got writing.
