The Really Heavy Greatcoat Archive: November 2006

4 November 2006: What a Waste...
The Really Heavy Greatcoat

BackNext

After I wrote the nuclear dumping strip comment above, Nick reminded me that dumping nuclear waste at Heysham, home to a nuclear power station already, is something that has in fact been considered. Afew years ago there was a proposal to have a nuclear waste "storage facility" built at Heysham B site. This was not going to be a hole in the ground per the current proposals, but a building 16 storeys high. It would have been the tallest building in the Morecambe area.

As Nick had the Greatcoat saying at the time: "Hey man, if you're going to piss in the swimming pool, why not do it from the diving board?"

Anyway, there was a big campaign against it (LAND -- "Lancaster Against Nuclear Dumping". Nick designed their logo). BNFL changed their plans and dropped the proposal to build the facility, whereupon LAND claimed a victory, although what actually happened was that BNFL couldn't get the Government funding to build the thing. At least, that was how it was reported. I mean, any other way would have meant BNFL bowing to public pressure, wouldn't it....?
