Napier Hemy became famous above all as a marine painter, his earliest
pictures in the genre being coastal scenes in the detailed manner of the
Pre-Raphaelites. He also produced historical paintings and landscapes,
but more or less confined himself to sea, coast and fishing scenes after
his move to Falmouth at the beginning of the 1880s.

The permanent exhibitions of the Museum present the history of shipbuilding,
life on board a ship, merchant shipping, steam technology, winter navigation
and the history of diving. The displays include material raised from the
sea. Fishing and pleasure boats are exhibited in the boat hall, and at
the quay outside the museum the restored lightship Kemi, built in 1901.

The Museum is housed in the National Naval Depot, a former arsenal of
the Dutch Navy that is over 300 years old. The unique collection tells
the story of the maritime past of the Netherlands. The jetty outside the
Museum provides a permanent berth for a replica of the Dutch East Indiaman
Amsterdam. Actors playing the sailors provide a 'life-like' impression
of life on board the Amsterdam.
