Fiction work is rarely commissioned from new authors, and it's not easy for established
authors, either! Some very commercially successful writers have that luxury,
but not the majority. Writing a book is completely different than writing a short
story. If you want to know more about writing, check out some of the sites on
our writers'
resources pages, or our writing
for comics section.

January 2001: Humanoids To Release The Incal by Jodorowsky, Janetov and Moebius as Comic Book Series
Humanoids Publishing will print one of the world's most influential comic adventure stories, The Incal by Moebius, Alexandro Jodorowsky, and Zoran Janjetov, as a monthly comic book series starting in April 2001. The material has never been available in comic book format before. Fred Beltran, premiere colorist on The Technopriests albums, will provide a master re-coloring of this exceptional material. The first three issues will feature cover art by Jose Ladronn, most recently of Marvel's Inhumans series.
This Humanoids Publishing presentation will be the first time that The Incal has been released according to the actual chronology of the story. The science fiction tale centring on detective John DiFool, was originated by writer Jodorowsky and artist Moebius. When the initial French release became a smash success, artist Janetov (once a student of Moebius) joined Jodorowsky in the creation of a prequel.
The latest chapter of The Incal by Jodorowsky and Moebius, part of a sequel to the original, was met with remarkable success when it went on sale in Europe recently. The album sold approximately $1.5 million at retail in its first week on sale. In 1988, Marvel's Epic line released the middle section of the story as three softcover graphic novels.
"We decided that the beginning of the story was the best place to start," Director of U.S. Publishing Dave Olbrich said. "In addition to the unequaled reading experience, this will also add an unique quality to these products that will benefit the audience. For fans of continuity, this story even features the guest appearance by a Metabaron."
The Metabarons, also written by Jodorowsky, has its ninth issue currently on sale in the direct market. Cover artist Ladronn is one of many comics professionals that view The Incal as a seminal work. "To work on the covers for this huge saga is very important to me, an extraordinary opportunity to re-create Jodorowsky's suicidal vision of the future" said Ladronn, who sites The Incal as one of his major influences. "After I first saw The Incal it started to be like the other side of my existence, the part that controls the subconscious mind and dreams. I absorbed everything, and the characters and places involved became part of my life".
The Authority author, Mark Millar, says "I actually met a guy in Glasgow who based his entire life on The Incal and even named his kids after a couple of the main characters. I know it's quite simply one of the most perfect comics ever conceived and probably the most beautiful piece of graphic literature ever drawn, but this guy just got a little too into it, as far as I'm concerned. Read it at your peril."
Peril or not, Humanoids Publishing Marketing Manager Ian Sattler says that fans and retailers will find this new comic book series very popular, "Combine all the elements. WeØve got top notch creators including Moebius, our serialized release plan, DiFool's first comic book appearance and you add them to the high esteem this material enjoys all over the world, it looks like The Incal will be a very 'in demand' book."
The first full color issue of The Incal is scheduled to ship to retailers in April 2001 and sell for $2.95. Back issues of The Metabarons are available for reorder while supplies last.
