| Online Art Board Supplies Comic art for the major US companies such as Marvel or DC is drawn on special art board that includes 'blue line' indicators so the artists draw to the correct size proprotional to the final US comic book art size. Artists contracted to the companies are provided with this board, although I am not sure if this is still supplied gratis, as it was in Paul Neary's day as Editorial Director at Marvel UK, or if they have to pay for it. Page measurements apparently vary slightly from company to company, so using ordinary Bristol board and a ruler may be a better option for the aspiring artist than seeking down this specialised board. 2000AD is now published pro to US comic book size. BlueLine There is a type of Bristol board called BlueLine which features these the official comic page measurments printed on it. It's solicited through Previews and, therefore, most comic shops should be able to order it. Some artists don't like it. Bristol Board Most art supply shops in Belfast sell Bristol board in A3 20 sheet blocks. Art Supplies • Great Art Supplies Gerstaecker UK Limited / Great Art, Normandy House, 1 Nether Street, Alton, Hampshire GU34 1EA Telephone Order line 0845 601 5772 (Local call rate) Described as Europe's largest and brightest catalogue for art materials, this company says "Whatever your angle - whether you're an art student, leisure painter, art teacher or professional artist - we're sure that you'll find that we are full of all the supplies you need." They publish a variety of catalogues for each country -- one artist I know orders material from their French rather than UK edition. • London Graphics Company 16-18 Shelton Street, Covent Garden London WC2H 9JL Tel: 020 7759 4500 Fax: 020 7759 4585 London Graphic Centre was established in 1973 as a specialist graphic materials supplier to the London Design and Advertising market. Dip Pens • Hans Presto This Swedish (with English translation) site apparently stocks and sells just about every dip pen ever made. It also has sections on Lettering, Comics and Handwriting. (thanks to artist Kev Hopgood for this one) |

Tale by Al Davison - a short story about Dwarfism commissioned
by Nowgen/Manchester University in 2008 |
Al Davison
Link: www.astralgypsy.com
Creator of comics such as The
Spiral Cage, Al Davison was born in Newcastle in 1960,
with severe Spina-Bifida. Doctors said he would be dead within hours/days/weeks/etc.
and described by one expert as a complete vegetable (as opposed to a complete
meal).
The expert never specified which particular vegetable he meant, which
might go part of the way to explaining why Al is still alive and kicking and
is a vegetarian with a particular affinity for broccoli.
Al started drawing as a baby in the isolation unit that he spent the first two years of his life in. He decided he wanted to go professional aged three, had his first work published when he was seventeen and his first Graphic Novel published when he was twenty two.
He has had work published by Titan Books, DC Comics, Dark Horse comics, Victor
Gollancz, Wizards of the Coast, Sherpa (Amsterdam) amongst others, with titles
such as Hellblazer,
The Dreaming, Tainted, The
Spiral Cage (Autobiography), Vermillion and The
Minotaur's Tale. Spiral
Dreams, Al's illustrated dream diary, was published
by Slab-O-Concrete in 2000.

Ian Duerden

Portfolio: Click Here
Ian is the creator of a number of beautifully-realized
Avengers TV strips, but is a well established Chartered Designer and Visualiser
with management experience in Design and Advertising studios.
His portfolio includes designed and illustrated brochures, book covers, tourist
centre and permanent museum displays, exhibition stands and architectural perspectives.
Blue chip accounts include the Halifax, RSPB, Laura Ashley and the National
Trust.
"I have to confess the work (which never seems like
‘work’) is a sort of professional practice," he says of his Avengers stories, "experimenting
with the media before transferring the new skills over to commercial work.
Six years ago it was all scanned watercolour on 140lb boards; now it is a complex
mix of various media using all the resources of my studio. It is a style I
can use commercially that wouldn’t have developed without all the practice
on Avenger Artland, or the enthusiasm of the fans of the Avengers TV that kept
encouraging me to develop the next story.
"I enjoy creating the strips and sometimes forget there is an audience out
there that reads them," he adds. "Artland isa place for me to let off some
creative steam when mundane commercial jobs have got me down. I sometimes look
at other artists and think I should simplify my work, or increase the black
outlines, or just conform to the contemporary standard of graphic art. But
my childhood hero was Frank Hampson who always strived after a photographic
or realistic style so I guess my style is too ingrained to change."
