Are
you an anarchist?
Quote from the Anti-Capitalist Convergence site: "Chances
are you have already heard something about who anarchists are and what
they are supposed to believe. Chances are almost everything you have heard
about them is nonsense. Many people seem to think that anarchists are
proponents of violence, chaos, and destruction, that they oppose all forms
of order and organization, that they are crazed nihilists who just want
to blow everything up. In reality, nothing could be further from the truth.
Anarchists are simply people who believe human beings are capable of behaving
in a reasonable fashion without having to be forced to. It's a very simple
notion, really. But it's the one notion that rich and powerful people
have always found the most alarming." Am I an anarchist? Does it
matter?

Center for the Study of Human Rights
The Center for the Study of Human Rights, The School of Journalism and
the Columbia Center for New Media Teaching and Learning at Columbia University
recently announced the launch of HR@CU, a new media portal and Web sites
for human rights teaching and learning.
The portal links human rights-related resources, such as case studies,
course Web sites, a multimedia edition of the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights, human rights publications and links to human rights centres
and institutes around the globe.
UK: Liberty
In an attempt to combat threats to society like terrorism and crime,
governments often rush to create new laws. They give themselves new powers
- without stopping to sufficiently consider the impact on our civil liberties
and human rights. Sometimes they end up sacrificing the very freedoms
these laws are intended to protect. Often this process is too gradual
to notice - until the moment we're affected ourselves. Then we realise
that our lives are not as private or as free as we thought.
