is a great place to start if you're looking for images for a particular project. Through it, you can out out calls for images or hire a photo researcher -- and locate libraries specifi to your needs covering a wide range of subjects. Invaluable.

BBC Research Central
Not just images (four million of 'em) but audio and video too. As yet there's no online search facillity. I often used the BBC Photo Library while I was editor of Doctor Who Magazine and once you got to know the team they were immensely helpful to us in tracking down the unusual photographs no-one had seen before.
